CD AUDIO SPECIFICATIONS

PROGRAM TIME
The standard maximum program time is 74 minutes 40 seconds. The absolute maximum program
time is 77 minutes 00 seconds. Any tapes with program times greater than 74 minutes 40 seconds
will require additional mastering time and will incur additional costs. The minimum program time is
1 minute 00 seconds. The minimum track duration is 3 seconds.

ACCEPTABLE SOURCES

Your production master may be in any of four formats: CD-R disc, Sony 1630 (usually for CD only),
digital audio tape (DAT), or digital compact disc (CD).
We test your master for digital errors before
replicating and will notify you of any problems. Note that there is a $25 fee for resubmitted masters.

CD-R Disc

All CD-R masters must be recorded without interruption in one single session and be "Red Book"
compatible (playable on standard CD players.) Submitted CD masters must be in good condition
with no scratches or imperfections. CDR's are very easy to damage - handle them with care. If
you must write on the disc itself, we recommend you do so in the clear plastic center to avoid
damage to the program side. Use a high quality brand, such as Mitsui, Taiyo-Yuden or Quantegy.
PMCD, HDCD, and Dolby Surround are also supported.

SONY 1630 Master
This format is a 3/4" U-Matic video tape that stores your music program in digital form along with
time-code information that is used to mark track locations. The digital sampling frequency for
a 1630 CD master must be 44.1 KHz. Other parameters: Non-drop frame SMPTE 1630 time code.
SMPTE time code on Aux. track 2. Program start >= 20 seconds (SMPTE time). PQ burst
(optional) on Aux. track 1 (at about :15).

DAT Master
This format uses a 4mm digital tape cassette. DATs used as CD production masters must use a
sampling frequency of 44.1 KHz throughout the entire program. Though not as reliable as the Sony
1630 format, DAT is the preferred production master format for cassette duplication. Please note
that there is a fee of $85 for transfers from DAT to CD-R.

Digital Compact Disc
Manufactured CDs can be used as masters to replicate more CDs. Whenever possible, only new
unplayed CDs should be sent as masters. Even a small scratch can create problems in digital
transfers.

Important guidelines for submitting CD-ROM masters
Your CD-ROM project will be delayed if your master has not been recorded properly. There are
several factors to consider when creating a CD-ROM master - please follow these guidelines to
ensure smooth and error-free production:
GENERAL
  • We will replicate your CD-R master as submitted, so you must ensure that it runs exactly like
you want the final CD-ROMs to run. We recommend that you test the software in as many
    different machines as possible.
  • We test your master for digital errors before replicating and will notify you of any problems.
Note that there is a $25 fee for resubmitted masters.
  • Groove House Records has a strict anti-piracy policy. Make sure you have all of the proper
clearances needed for the software you are replicating.
HARDWARE
  • Record your CD-ROM master as a single session, disc-at-once (DAO), mode 1 disc. Note
that some burners, such as Sony and Hewlett Packard may default to track-at-once (TAO)
mode. Be sure to check with your user manual for details.
  • Most home computers now come equipped with CD burners. Keep in mind that the quality
can vary greatly! To get the best quality master, we recommend looking into some of the
better burners such as Plextor, LaCie and Yamaha.
  • Use a high quality media brand to record your master. We recommend Mitsui, Taiyo-Yuden,
and Quantegy. Do not use CD-RW (rewritable) discs.
SOFTWARE
  • Though Easy CD Creator for PC and Toast for Mac (both by Adaptec/Roxio) are the most
popular programs, there are better programs out there, such as Nero (Ahead Software) and
Gear Pro (Gear Software). Note that programs such as Easy CD Creator also support track
at once, so remember to select the right program options when preparing a master disc.
Whichever software you use, make sure that it supports disc at once and allows you to
select between CD-ROM Mode 1 and CD-ROM XA.
  • Do not use Adaptec/Roxio Direct CD or any other software that uses packet writing for your
CD-ROM master. Because data is written to it a few files at a time, a packet written CD will
havemultiple tracks and discontinuities in the data which do not belong in a disc image
    suitable for manufacturing.
FILE SYSTEMS
  • CDs for PCs and the Windows operating systems should be written in either ISO-9660 or
Joliet file systems. If your audience is strictly Windows-based, you can master your CD-ROM
using Joliet. If you want to reach Windows, Macintosh, and UNIX users, ISO 9660 Level-1 or
Level-2 will offer the best cross-platform compatibility.
  • CD-ROMs designed solely for use in Macintosh systems use the HFS structure, complete
with data forks and desktop icons.
  • Hybrid discs are those that can play on multiple platforms, including Macintosh, Windows,
UNIX, and DOS. We recommend using a product specifically designed to handle hybrid
creation to decrease the problems associated with multi-platforms production.

DVD SPECIFICATIONS

Acceptable Input Media: DLT (Digital Linear Tape), DVD-R (DVD-5 only): 3.95GB - 4.7GB, 8 mm
Exabyte, or a replicated DVD disc.
  • DLTs must contain the pre-mastered image with DDP 2.0 or higher for all layers whether
opposite or parallel tracking. DLTs must also be recorded with ANSI labeling. Do not write DLTs
in compressed mode. Take care not to drop DLTs - this can cause internal damage and render
    the tape unreadable.
  • DVD-R is acceptable for DVD-5 only. Make sure that submitted discs are in good condition without
    scratches or imperfections.
Disc Capacities: DVD 5 - 4.7GB Max, DVD 9 - 8.5GB Max, DVD 10 – 9.5 GB, DVD 18 – 17 GB.

Image Tapes: Many desktop premastering systems allow the user to simulate their DVD before
submitting it to a replication facility. These systems often allow the creation of a tape which is an exact
image of the DVD to be manufactured. Please supply the following when submitting an image tape:
DDP version, tape block size, tape record size, total number of DVD sectors.

Hybrid discs: DVD-video and/or DVD-audio files must be contained in the appropriate directories.
Check discs: Groove House Records can provide you with a final "check disc" for testing purposes
(additional charges apply). If you decide not to order a check disc, you will need to sign a waiver
before we can replicate.

Data Identification: Data must be identified as DVD-5, DVD-9 or DVD-10. In case of DVD-9 and DVD-10,
data must be further identified as layer 0 or layer 1.

CSS Encryption: Groove House Records offers CSS (Content Scramble System) copy protection which
prevents disc-to-disc copying. There is no additional charge for this service. When submitting CSS
encrypted masters, please indicate whether the encryption keys are: present on the DLT, present on a
customer-supplied floppy disc, or to be provided by Groove House Records. If you wish us to provide the
encryption keys, please submit the following information: total number of VTS (video title sets), total
number of VTS for each DLT (DVD-5 and DVD-10 only) , and total number of VTS for both DLTs
combined DVD-9 only.
